Best Euphonium Buying Guide

What key is the euphonium in?

The euphonium just like the tenor trombone is in the key of Bb.

What this means is that, because the euphonium is a valved brass instrument, when no valves are being used, the euphonium will give partials of the B♭ harmonic series. Generally, in orchestral settings, the euphonium is always regarded as a non-transposing brass instrument, just like its counterpart, the trombone. The euphonium is written at concert pitch in the bass clef with musical passages in the higher register written in the tenor clef. The treble clef euphonium parts that transpose down a major ninth are always included in many concert band music in British-styled brass bands. It is very common for euphonium music to be written this way. As for continental European band music, euphonium parts may be written in the bass clef just as a B♭ transposing instrument, thus sounding a major second lower than written. In conclusion, it greatly depends on where the music is being written and played.

What is the difference between baritone and euphonium?

The main difference is in the size of the bore. The baritone’s bore and the bell are smaller than that of the euphonium. The euphonium bore is conical while the baritone’s ore is cylindrical.

Tonally, the euphonium will always have a darker more mellow sound compared to the baritone which is brighter and lighter. Baritones typically have three valves, although a few might have four. Because the baritone is more tightly wrapped than the euphonium, it always appears to be more compact. However, both the baritone and the euphonium have found their way into several contemporary and older styles of music. They were both invented in the 1840s.

How many valves should a standard euphonium have?

Typically, euphoniums come with either three or four valves. Some professionals prefer the four-valve euphoniums because the extra valve helps with intonation and enhances the low pitch.

What is the difference between compensating and non-compensating euphoniums?

A compensating euphonium comes with extra tubing. This extra tubing  “compensates” for the tendency of the euphonium’s sharp lower register.

When you press down the fourth valve of a compensating euphonium, air will be redirected through an auxiliary set of euphonium slides on valves 1 into 3, when in use. These euphonium slides will lower the pitch, even more, causing the lower notes to become closer in tune. On the other hand, non-compensating euphoniums come with a fourth valve that works just like any other euphonium valve. The pitch of the euphonium, in this case, will be lowered 2-1/2 steps, and the player will have to make the needed technical adjustments in order to get the low range in tune.

Conclusion and Winner(s)

It is important to know that regardless of my choices and preferences, all euphoniums mentioned and reviewed in this article are just amazing in their own rights. You can feel free to deviate by choosing which you feel is better on this list. However,  I chose the ROWELL Euphonium 4 Valves Bb Brass Lacquer Gold 4 Stainless Steel Pistons as my first choice because of its versatility and overall top-quality. Considering the intonation and overall design of this euphonium, this is one of the best euphoniums you can ever lay your hands on in this price range. The ROWELL euphonium is professionally and ergonomically crafted. Also, it is made with a special kind of brass that is only used for musical instruments. The overall intonation and sonority are top-class, making it one of the best ever euphoniums you can lay your hands on in this price range. It is perfect for players of all levels, from total beginners to seasoned professionals. Above all, it comes with a two-year warranty against the manufacturer’s defect.

Second on my list is the Stagg WS-EP245 Bb Euphonium with Case. Another amazingly crafted euphonium for the intermediate player and even the seasoned professional. With top-class finishing and an ABS case included, this euphonium plays awesome and also looks awesome. If you are looking to make a decent upgrade from a beginner euphonium without exactly breaking the bank, then this might be just the perfect euphonium for you.
